Austria & Germany – Open Piano for Refugees – Year-round

January 1, 2023

We’ve been privileged to play our first “Open Piano for Refugees” since the start of the program. It’s a pretty much year-round event moving from city to city, spread mainly over 2 neighbor countries: Germany and Austria, with tours through Denmark and Sweden so far. When you’re playing, you’re busking for a good cause:

About the Pianos

The pianos aren’t exactly moving from city to city, it’s the program that’s moving, relying on local partners providing local baby-grands. One even more beautiful than the other and all in perfect playable condition, especially for Street Pianos!

From their photo Gallery, you’ll notice that they offer beautiful grand pianos and baby-grands. We played this excellent Feurich Baby-Grand in the city of Bonn.

Some of them are art-worked, most of them aren’t, but what about below numbers of baby-grands, wow 🙂 ! Here’s 2 examples from the Open Piano for Refugees Facebook.

About the Venue/Event

This sequence of Events, spread over mainly 2 countries, started in 2016 and continues to draw attention to both the refugees situation and of course our beloved public pianos.

As you’ll read on the Open Piano for Refugees website, goal is to bring people from all walks of life together by placing freely accessible baby-grands in public places. Places of encounter arise where language and words become superfluous. The project strengthens the social participation of refugees and overall social cohesion.

About the Organizer

So first let this wonderful team introduce themselves! Next, for those of you able to speak/understand German, here’s some of their press-footage.

Their motto – A musical instrument becomes an integration instrument. Everyone can play. Everyone can listen!

The team coordinates set-up and dismantling, weather protection, permits, piano transports, continuous support and performance of the pianos, as well as the organization of concerts at the locations. Generated donations are invested in their social music institute DoReMi.
